I’m generally a rock fan at heart although I do like other stuff as well.
But this band really must be amazingly good to get me tapping my foot, and singing along to Hip-Hop and then listening to it again and again!
Back in January 2010 I started up a group on Facebook to try and find a song which we could get into the top 40 singles chart by buying it all together.
One of the one hundred plus acts that entered the contest were Digital Earth, who later went on to win the popular vote, much to my surprise. (I always assumed that a rock band would win)
On first hearing their 60 second sample I was curious but not especially impressed but it was good enough to put forward to the public vote and it was then voted through to the second round.
In the second round I asked all the bands to send me a complete MP3 of their song. Listening to the full song I was much more impressed and, despite it being very different to the sort of thing I would normally enjoy, it had a certain special something that set it apart from anything else I had ever heard.
In the song (Charlatan Old Boy) Digital Earth seamlessly blend jazz with hip hop and classic soul. Soaring female vocals jockey with hard edged rap all held together with jazzy trumpet (or it may in fact be flugel horn if their publicity blurb is anything to go by)
Honestly you have to hear it to have ANY CLUE what I mean. They have songs available on their myspace page
There is no doubt that the band went all out to win the contest and also to promote it. They splurged posts on facebook, and myspace, posted on forums, and sent out mailers to their fans to vote for them, and more importantly they managed to engineer an appearance on their local BBC TV evening show. An outstanding piece of PR.
As anyone who knows about GUBIC will know, we failed in our mission but I think that Digital Earth did sell a fair number of copies of their single in that week and they certainly made a lot of new friends and fans along the way.
They are still going and promised new developments in 2013 so if you fancy something a bit unusual yet still great then go check them out. FACEBOOK page
