Kitty And The Lost Boys – female fronted versatile pop-rock

Who needs pigeonholes anyway?

Kitty and the Lost Boys are not easy to define

And that in a nut shell is a big part of their charm.

I can’t even be quite sure of where they are from. Their Reverb Nation says Plymouth but the Facebook page says Tavistock and London.

The eponymous Kitty has quite a sweet voice, with a hint of girlishness, but that childlike masque is a veneer over a mature vocal that can be husky or smooth, mellow or rich. (Sorry, that description has just made me want a coffee really badly. I’ll be right back)

Right …. where was I? Oh yes. Kitty and the Lost Boys.

It isn’t all that clear what the line up is from reading their own blurb Kitty sings and plays bass, Blind Johnny plays guitar, and the rest of the band are credited as various lost boys as and when needed.

Well whoever plays harmonica on “Cold Wind Blowing” it was he (or she) who made me sit  up and listen when I first heard it on XRP radio. This song starts with a melodic guitar with heavy shimmering vibrato/reverb effect and includes the aforementioned harmonica playing in between Kitty’s soulful melancholic serenade. It reminds me slightly of The Cowboy Junkies, so laid back you feel it could limbo dance under toilet doors. I visualise her sitting outside the jail, while her man “who never done no wrong” is in the cell, blowin’ his harp through the bars like a baleful hound baying at the moon.

Another track “CRY” steams right in with riff laden guitar. Although this could be stored in the drawer labelled post-punk/bubble-gum pop alongside artists like Blondie and Strawberry Switchblade, it includes a very un-punk un-pop guitar solo, that sets it apart from others of the genre.

“Its Not OK” sounds something like a cross between a much more musical version of Lilly Allen, and something by The Yardbirds. Kitty’s voice at its most childlike so far. There is a big tempo change in the middle eight with Kitty’s disembodies voice drifting down to you from a balcony on a cool summer’s evening before the guitar solo takes over.

The songs are deceptively simple mellow pleasant and thoughtful. Sometimes introverted but not so all-embracingly melancholy as, say, Suzanne Vega. What is nice is that there is a streak of similarity in style running through the various tracks without the tedious homogeneity of some pop acts. Clearly nobody has told this band to “write another song like the first hit”.  Can’t Stop Loving You (live) has quite a long passage of instrumental in it which wold never be allowed on boring old main stream radio.

In conclusion. I’m rubbish at conclusions. I’ve finished my coffee.
I can’t find a website, which is unusual for a band with four albums under their belt. As any regular readers will know I think your own website is an essential art of any up and coming band.
